[4362]  1850 use of the 5 cent 1847 issue, Scott #1, from New York City to Pontiac Michigan.  Red square grids and red CDS, two vertical file folds (one toned; the other slightly impacts stamp).  Unusually, has a "due 5" marking at upper left and a partially erased "due 5" in pencil at bottom - the cover was over 300 miles so should have been 10 cents.  New York is the most common origin for 5 cent 1847 covers, of course, but an underpaid cover with a due marking is quite unusual; the Classics Society census lists maybe 2 dozen examples from New York.  4 margin stamp, very close at lower left; crease is barely noticeable at the bottom right corner of the stamp.  2010 PF cert accompanies. SOLD
[3369] Scott #1, 5 cent 1847 issue, on cover from Charlestown, Virginia to Baltimore.  Red CDS and multiple strikes of grid cancel tie stamp, which has large margins all around but for slightly cut corners at left top and bottom.  Light diagonal corner crease.  Revers has a few old paper hinge markings from a prior mounting.  Just four covers from Charlestown are reported in the 1847 census.  Charlestown, which received 2500 5 cent stamps, is now part of West Virginia (Jefferson County).  Very nice West Virginia use!  SOLD
[y1372] Very nice example of Scott 1a, with the Dot in S variety, tied on a folded letter from Boston.  Dec. 23, 1847 use; personal letter content; circular grid on stamp, sent to Brattleboro VT.  Pretty stamp with huge right margin; full top and bottom margins; narrow left margin to just at the frameline at bottom left.  Wonderful example of this uncommon shade, with new PSAG certificate.  SOLD
[y1373] Pretty New York to Montreal, Canada use of the 10 cent 1847 issue, Scott 2.  Red CDS; stamp with sharp impression and huge top and right margins; narrow left margin; cut in at bottom; a few light vertical file folds, one of which impacts stamp.  4 1/2p Canada rate; business letter content.  Some light adhesive may have been used in a prior mounting or to keep letter closed; it's a bit tacky.  The online 1847 census shows 29 covers from New York to Montreal with a single #2.  Lovely cover.  With new PSAG certificate.
