[3509]  Scarce West Milton, Ohio oval handstamp stampless marking.  Folded letter with staining and toning, bold 25 cent manuscript rate to Pennsylvania with personal letter content to an aunt and uncle with 1837 dateline.  Miami County, 1829-operating, but quite uncommon marking that was mis-traced and listed as West Hamilton in the last published version of the ASCC.  Scarce Ohio oval handstamp.  $100
[3203] Nice example of the Morningville, New York boxed straightline handstamp on a stampless cover from the early 1850s.  Envelope only with no content; no date but appears to be a 3 manuscript rate marking; addressed to Love Joys Hotel, NY.  Red boxed straightline marking is additionally notable due to the inclusion of the county name in the second line; county-name markings are very unusual in the stampless era. $100
[4606.6]  Neat Orfordville NH stampless folded letter from 1846.  Large red arc handstamp; 5 rate at lower right, sent to Nashua.  Larger size cover, with lengthy personal letter contenet; cover with staining, particularly at right but scarce town marking, valued at $150 20 years ago in the last edition of the ASCC. $100
[4366.15]  Nice early Providence Rhode Island straightline postmark on stampless folded letter to New York.  "Free" handstamp (unusually in upper and lower case); cover with some soiling and a vertical file fold.  Interestingly, addressed to the postmaster "at Columbia now at New York" - illustrating that a postmaster could both send and receive mail free even away from his office.  Letter headlined "dear friend" but is business and financial content signed by a man named Whipple, splits at folds and rather fragile.  ASCC $175 from 20 years ago.   $100
[4366.41]  Nice example of the uncommon Providence, Rhode Island straightline handstamp. Stampless cover (outer wrapper only; no inner content but some docketint provides 1795 date).  Clear strike of handstamp, manuscript date below with manuscript 25 rate; unusually addressed to a southern state (Edenton, North Carolina).  A few foxing spots but an attractive 18th century stampless.  Reported in the ASCC as used 1793-1799, valued at $175 20 years ago.  $100
[2513.4] Pretty 1808 Northampton, Massachusetts stampless folded cover.  Clear rimless arc marking  in a dark magenta with manuscript date added, 12 ½ cent rate marking, addressed to Hanover (NH), light horizontal file fold.  Cover only, no content, but docketing provides 1808 date.  Ex Kingsley and Conland.  ASCC $100 from 20 years ago; a superior example of this pretty marking.  $100
[4364.4]  Nice Jacksonopolis, Michigan stampless folded letter to Ira, NY.  1838 year date, 25 cent rate; GREEN CDS (cover with water or damp staining at lower portion with some minor edge wear).  Jackson County 1832-1838, Helbock R8; this became present-day Jackson.  Letter is datelined from Oneida, Eaton County and is a long personal letter signed by Samuel and Rebecca Preston.  $100
[2149] Unusual “albino” strike of the Athens, Ohio straightline handstamp marking from 1828.  Lightly inked but mostly just impressed; this went on for a while during 1828.  Manuscript “10” rate at upper right; addressed to Chillicothe.  ASCC $200.  Vertical file folds with some splitting and edge chipping.  Long letter content (likely religious in nature) which I did not read due to fragility of letter.   $100
[4606.7] Pretty early 1850s (letter content looks like 1855, but that seems late) stampless from Orfordville NH, with blue handstamp arc postmark and 5 rate handstamp; manuscript date added.  Small ladies' cover with embossed edges and deckled flaps; with personal letter content datelined from Plainfield VT.  Pretty cover, ASCC value $150 from 20 years ago. $100
[2973]  1832 Meadville, Pennsylvania stampless folded letter.  Red boxed straightline handstamp at lower left; with “Dec” month and manuscript day added.  No state name in postmark.  Free manuscript rate marking with “MC”; cover is addressed to Cornelius Holland, who was a US representative from Maine during 1830-1833.  Short letter signed by an Aaron Barton, who seems to know Holland personally.  ASCC value $150 from 20 years ago.  $100
[3943] Scarce and attractive straightline postmark on stampless folded letter from Ovid, New York to Auburn, with postmaster free frank, in 1832.  Light vertical file fold in center doesn't impact markings.  Political or business content; pretty cover.  Marking is reported only in 1832 in ASCC, with value of $175 from 20 years ago. SOLD
[3944] Pretty 1812 York, Maine straightline handstamp in red on folded letter to Saco.  District of Maine period; "paid" in manuscript and handstamp; double rate 16 cents (2x the 8 cent rate for under 40 miles); legal letter content with signature removed and small piece of tape to seal a tear; cover with staining at bottom but still attractive.  ASCC value $250 from 20 years ago; listed only in black.  $150
[3188.2] Circa 1960 free frank of Edith Wilson as widow of President Woodrow Wilson, to Mrs. William Borah (Borah was a US senator during Wilson's term).  Late in Mrs. Wilson's life but obviously in her hand - and most notably, handwritten frank, which is highly unusual for Wilson, who typically used a handstamp.  This is the only hand-written Wilson frank I've seen.  No date; machine cancel is run across the corner.  "Postage Verified" auxiliary marking from New York; a postal clerk must have questioned the frank.  FRONT ONLY with attached backflap showing imprint of Mayfair House.  SOLD
[3176]  1934 free frank of Mary Lord Harrison (as the widow of President Benjamin Harrison).  Unusually, mailed from Indianapolis IN rather than New York, with International machine cancel.  Clear hand-written frank; addressed in Harrison’s hand locally to the University club.  Return address imprint on backflap; this was Harrison’s personal stationery.  Original signed letter content (on her imprinted stationery), noting “it was very nice to see you again.  I am sending my franked envelope to you for your friend as you requested…”  Harrison’s franks aren’t among the scarcer of the presidential widows, but her franks with letter content are much less common.  SOLD
[3163]  Henderson, Kentucky, crude handstamp arc on 1831 stampless folded letter to Corydon, IN.  Manuscript date and 18 ¾ rate.  ASCC $200; nice example of this scarce marking.  $150
[3154]    Twice-forwarded Washington DC stampless cover to South Carolina.  Washington CDS at upper left in black with integral “5” unpaid rate, apparently addressed to Glenn Springs SC, then forwarded to Pickens CH, to Edgefield, and maybe again to Glenn Springs.  Pickens CH manuscript at upper left; “forwarding” manuscript marking; total due 10 cents; then a second “fowd” manuscript marking on the backflap, with a recalculation to 15 cents.  Unusual double-forwarded (and possibly three times, though only 2 of the forwardings have postage charged) cover.  SOLD
[3157]  1852 stampless postmaster free frank from North Blandford, Massachusetts to Otis, MA.  Envelope with business letter content.  Partially clear red CDS with handstamp “FREE” and manuscript frank at upper right.  Hampden County DPO, 1828-1905, Helbock R5 (Merolla & Crowther R7).  $20
[3170.1]  Free Frank of Winfield Scott as Lieut. General in the US Army; he was the first to hold that position since George Washington.  Scott served as the commanding general from 1841-61.   Small envelope to General George Cadwalader; New York CDS in red with integral "free" rate. Christmas Eve date; 1855 or later with the Lieut. Gen. status; scarce thus.  Backflap is complete and attached but has additional paper adhered to it (over the entire flap) from a prior mounting.  Would look good with your 24 cent banknote.  $175
[3048]  1843 New York to London transatlantic, per "Caledonia".  New York red CDS of May 30; arc "paid"; two vertical file folds and a small stain.  Reverse has British receiver and nice large forwarder oval marking of Collomb & Iselin. Letter actually originated at Havana, with business content. Ask for scan of the front side if you'd like to see it (until I figure out the best way to link it on this site).  $100
